Finding all access point of a network

Hi all,

I am trying to write a C prog that will get me all the access points of a network.

I am not sure how to start the search. I dont mind doing a brute force search using all the ip addresses but that would be too time consuming.

Also is there any way of using SNMP to do this.

How do I distinguish between just a computer connected on the network to a Access point connected or even a router ?

Also assuming I know all the AP connected on the network, if any new AP is plugged in, is there any way that I can detect it ?

Any help or pointer is appreciated. I understand that this question is too vague and would be happy to clarify any point I missed out.

Thank you.

This might help you out:

Also, check the nessus website, I think that have some information about writing plugins using C, if you want to go in that direction.
