Ethernet over power lines

I am moving my computer upstairs which does not have a wired access point to my network. This means I only have two options the first is wireless and the second is the ethernet over power lines option.

I do not wish to use a wireless dongle as they really are more trouble then they are worth under linux, even on well supported chipsets. So this means I only have the option of using a wireless ethernet bridge, so I can bypass the whole mess of usb dongles and just do everything over ethernet and then configure the birdge just like a normal router.

I am considering the ethernet over power lines option as well. However I have not been able to find much information about this technology. The various venders I have look at only mention Windows in the system requirements (not surprising). Are the devices independendent of the operating system like a router, or they require actual drivers to be installed or anything. I know this may seem a little stupid considering they connect to the computer via the ethernet port, but the cd contents mention drivers, so I want to make sure.

Does anyone use the ethernet over power lines for networking here? Will they work under Linux? OOr do they require special windows only drivers etc?

Thanks in advance

Michael.

If they they are a bridge type device I would not think linux would come into play. As long as the wired nic under linux works then once the device is setup it becomes and extension of your network.

Same idea with a Linksys wireless bridge device. Only thing needed is a working wired nic and then access the wireless bridge config page and modify to match wireless setup. Let the device handle the WPA security.
