DLink DWA-131 usb wireless adapter - ifup wlan1 fails, Association request to driver failed

Running Debian Jessie.

I disconnected my DLink DWA-131 USB wireless adapter to use in another computer and decided to reconnect it to its original computer. Now ifup attempts result in failure. Watching wpa_supplicant debug output, there are several
Code:
Association request to drive failed
messages. The original firmware (firmware-realtek) is still installed and the previous settings are in place again.

When trying
Code:
ifup wlan1
Code:
wpa_supplicant: /sbin/wpa_supplicant daemon failed to start
run-parts: /etc/network/if-pre-up.d/wpasupplicant exited with return code 1
failed to bring up wlan1
However,
Code:
iwlist wlan1 scanning
works and gets the light blinking again.

Any ideas as to what the problem may be?

Please let me know if any additional information is needed.

Are you sure wpa_supplicant.conf file syntax is correct?

Yes. I had to prepend
Code:
iwconfig wlan1 essid <essid> &&
to the interfaces pre-up command. Not sure why though since I've never needed it before.
