dhcpcd not working?

I have been trying to get my wireless working, i finally got all my drivers and firmware etc installed. correctly i hope. anyways i run the command
iwlist eth0 scan and find all avaliable access points. but how do i connect to these? i thought you just iwconfig eth0 essid name of essid to connect tothen run dhcpcd to obtain the ip and all that good stuff, but when i run dhcpcd it dosent seem to do anything. for example, im logged into root and i can see linux:/home/lappy # then the cursor. when i run the command it just moves down a line and i can not see anything.

like this

linux:/home/lappy # /sbin/dhcpcd
|

where "|" is just the cusor.

is this normal, any help would be greatly appriciated. Oh, and i have the dhcp daemon installed

Have you actually tried to see if you are on the internet?
Like opened a browser?
When I run dhcpcd wlan0 up, I get no output, just another line, and I am on the internet.

Sorry if I sounded mean there.

EDIT:
This how I connect after I've loaded the ndiswrapper module (I use ndiswrapper)
Code:
iwconfig wlan0 mode Managed
iwconfig wlan0 essid youressid
dhcpcd wlan0 up

Some clarification?

The quick and dirty way of obtaining an IP address is this:
Code:
#dhcpcd eth0 start
I'm assuming the following:
your wireless interface is called eth0
dhcpcd has not been started before, if wrong substitute restart for start.

Your wireless interface will show on the ifconfig command when your successful.
