Creating an Ubuntu box Wireless Router

Hello everyone...

I am hoping that someone out there can help us with our school project.

Anyway, we are trying to create for our school project a wireless router out of an Ubuntu box. We would have downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 and install it. The system works normally, it has even the wireless card (which is an RALINK RT61) up and running.

However, when we attempted to configure it to become a wireless router it doesn't work. We look for "how-to's" and found something about madwifi... Unfortunately, madwifi only supports Atheros-based wlans... We tried to find an Atheros-based wlan but it is so scarce here in our place...

My question is, are there other ways for us to do this using the RT61 wlan? if there are, can anyone point us to the right direction?

I hope to hear from the gurus soon.

Thanks.

Welcome to LinuxQuestions.

I believe the RT61 with the latest drivers is can be configured in master mode. hostapd is the daemon that is used for wireless access points and authentication servers but I have never played with it so do not know if it will work with your wireless adapter. Other stuff you will need is bridge-utils to bridge the wireless and wired ports together if any, WPA supplicant, DHCP if desired and configuring the firewall.
