Converting WRT54G wireless router to bridge?
 

A friend of mine just moved to a house where he only has access to a wireless router and does not have a wireless card. In addition to the router provided by the ISP, he has a spare Linksys WRT54G wireless router. Is it possible to connect to the spare router through a wired connection and have it act as a "bridge" to the ISP's router? He is running Fedora 9, if that makes any difference.

I'm still learning the details of a lot of the concepts involved here, so any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Your might look in the DD-WRT free opensource firmware for Lynksys Routers. I have flashed my WRT54G with it and turned a 70$ router into a 500$ one.

It's incredible what you can do with it. I am pretty sure you could configure it as a bridge altough you will have to research this.

That sounds like my setup - i have an old wireless router wired to my internet router to act as an access point. It works fine. Just had to turn off the WAN facility and DHCP on my wireless router as my workstations get their IP's from the other wired router and the WAN bits were trying to connect via ADSL (it has an inbuilt ADSL modem).

Basically my wireless router acts as a switch between the wired LAN ports and the wireless port so everything just works.

You just have to connect the LAN ports on the two routers together - disable DHCP on the Linksys and it should work.

edit: Just reread OP and realized you want to connect to the Linksys wired. This should just work as the wired connection act as a switch so just follow the instructions above.
