Connecting to AP's

Hi,
This for some might be a simple question but i thought id ask it
anyway.I was just wondering after discovering AP's with
kismet and knowing their SSID ,MAC and WEP key. Are the only
files that need to be edited in /etc/pcmcia (for a laptop)
and /etc/wlan or is there others? And if so how would you participate
on the network after these files have been edited with the previously
mentioned information ?
I know in windows you have your network neighbourhood
so what is Linux's equivalent?

Cheers
