connect FC4 to current Windows network

I am attempting to connect my new Linux box to a Windows Server 2003 network. I do not wish to join the domain, only to use the gateway of the network to hit the internet. From everything I have read thus far, it seems pretty simple, but for some reason it's not working.

ifconfig shows my eth0 is there, though there are no RX or TX packets.

Loopback is fivers.

eth0 is activated, config'd as 192.168.0.125/255.255.255.0; gateway is 192.168.0.100; DNS is 192.168.0.186

I thought maybe my card was bad, but I switched it out... no joy...

Unable to ping any other device on the network.

Unable to ping Linux box from other boxes on network.

With windows, to join the workgroup, you just config the TCP/IP, name your computer, and join the workgroup (using admin credentials in the popup dialog box). This is all I wish to attain with this Linux box, merely to use the internet. I'm not even looking to access network shares (though I will later).

A few years ago (which is the last time I had the honor to do anything with Linux) I was able to use Windows ICS to use its internet connection with my Linux box. But that was a home setup, not a server-based LAN.

I must be missing something. Please let me know what you think.

Somehow I posted this in the wireless section by accident... sorry about that....
