Close...linksys 54g suse 9.1 no internet
 

Hi,

I really hope someone can help me track down the problem, cause I am really close. I have a linksys 54g card configured with ndiswrapper on my compaq armada e500 running suse 9.1 personal. I gave up trying to get this thing to work a few months ago, but picked it up again.

I sucessfully got the card set up and I am able to ping my internal network and ping the internet by IP address. Dhcpcd successfully configures a resolv.conf file that appears to have the correct nameservers. Ifconfig and iwconfig seem to give results that look like everything is set up correctly. I get an ip address under wlan0.

I was also successful in accessing the internet using my Ethernet card, before I started messing with the wireless card. Now, nothing seems to touch the outside except by ip address. I am using qwest dsl with msn.

I tried the route command which works OK when I use route –n, but is very slow when I use route. It seems to not give a gateway address either except “*”s. Traceroute also gives *s when I use this command to go to an ip address on my local network. I am not sure what these two commands are supposed to do when everything works correctly, but I assume it is not working.

Can anyone give me a hint on where to go next.

If you can only access external sites via ip then the problem has to be with your DNS settings. Check these and you will solve your problem.

I have manually changed the resolv.conf with nameservers that are suggested by my isp. This does nothing. The ones produced by dhcpcd seem to be correct.

If you are behind a router then you will want to use that as your DNS server. For example, my isp here in the UK is ntl and their DNS settings
194.168.4.100
194.168.8.100
whereas in fact in Fedora my DNS settings are both
192.168.2.1

because my router acts as my DNS.

Thanks, I'll try that. Currently the first DNS is set to router and second one is set to the isp's nameserver.

i aslo had thaty problem i gave up i put my gateway then 172.255.255.255 i thing or 127.255.255.255 and my provider 3rd it worked after
