cannot set wireless AP sometimes (SuSE 10.0)
I find that I often cannot set the AP of my wireless card to point to a nearby wireless access point. What I normally do is use kInternet, go to the "Wireless LAN" window, click on "Start Active Scan", choose one of the search results that doesn't have WEP enabled, and click "connect". This always pops up a window telling me that it failed, but usually when I move to the "Current connection" tab I find out that it has actually worked (SSID and AP are correctly set), and I'm online.
Here's the problem: frequently after using one access point for a while, I switch to another by suspending my laptop, physically moving to a new place, and trying the above again. This time, it will switch to the new network, but the AP always shows up as 44:44:44:44:44:44 in the Current connection tab. Furthermore, I cannot even set the ap manually (through "iwconfig wlan0 ap") - the next iwconfig command I run shows the correct essid, but the 44:44... AP again. It's as though iwconfig is ignoring my ap command.
Sometimes doing an ifdown/ifup on wlan0 fixes this problem, but sometimes not. Lately I've even seen this happen when I first boot.
If there are any SuSE 10.0 laptop users out there who work from different places, I'd like to hear from you on this issue - or anyone else with an insight, for that matter... Thanks!
