Cannot connect with Edimax Wifi USB dongle

In a new Ubuntu install, we cannot get wireless working. Ifconfig shows eth0 (wired) and lo, but no eth1. The wireless hardware is an Edimax rt73usb USB dongle. I see that it is detected in kern.log. This is the last page of the log:

I suspect the problem could be due to a problem with the drivers. I don't use Ubuntu, but I have a similar card and the rt2x00 drivers shipped with openSUSE 10.3 were problematic and kept failing (showing errors similar to yours). I uninstalled the rt2x00 driver and then installed the rt73 (USB) driver from Serialmonkey. This worked perfectly fine for me, so it maybe worth looking at.

I have the same card and the same problem with all the buntus. You can try blacklisting the other ralink drivers although I never tried. Ubuntu may be confused by the choices.

Most other distros have no problem detecting and connecting with this card.

I have the Belkin Wireless G + MIMO ver. 4000 that uses the rt73usb driver and with Fedora 8 it works "out of the box".
