cannot connect to wireless internet using linux
 

i cannot connect to linux using my wireless card(BCM94306 802.11g)....this is a certified compatible piece of hardware as it says on the mandriva site(i have mandriva 2006)....i cannot find the driver for it however on the list. I can, although, connect to the internet using windows on the same machine. Can someone help me...thanks.

That looks like a Broadcom card, and Broadcom doesn't have any native Linux drivers so you'll have to use either ndiswrapper or linuxant along with the Windows driver. If you check out the ndiswrapper wiki (see my sig for the link) there are some extremely good installation instructions.

i have ndiswrapper on my mandriva 2006 already. Its just that i can't get to my windows driver from Linux. How do i do that

You've got 2 or 3 ways to do this:

1) Mandriva can probably read NTFS partitions so you could mount your Windows drive if you are dual booting.

2) Use a USB stick, CD or floppy

3) Download the drivers directly to linux. Sometimes with self extracting .exe file, unzip can unpackage it, but not always.

where would the file be located within windows do you think. IM gonna go the USB route likely. under the broadcam card there is an IEEE driver there and when i chose LAN connections after i click on the broadcom card, it has that IEEE driver. I go through the setup<next,next,next-no typing whatsoever> and it doesn't seem to work even after it says Congratulations.

Would you post what you did to get your card working? If someone stumbles on this thread through searching LQ, it always helps if there is an explanation of what worked.

According to the Ndiswrapper wiki (http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/m....php/Main_Page)
a cvs version of ndiswrapper 1.6rc had to be downloaded to get the Broadcom AirForce One BCM4318 wireless LAN controller to work under SuSe 10.0.

I did a package search using Yast2 on my Cisnet-80 (Nascar PC laptop running a AMD Turion) and found two ndiswrapper applications. Since I am running the Gnome desktop the km_ndiswrapper Kernel module sources was not loaded. The ndiswrapper package that utilizes the Microsoft NDIS network drivers for WLAN cards is loaded.

Why is there a workaround for the Broadcom BCM4318 wireless LAN controller (having to download ndiswrapper 1.6rc and a driver) if SuSe 10.0 provides a loadable kernel module that wraps around NDIS (Windows network driver API) drivers?

I have not tried to run my laptop via a wireless setup yet (currently running fast ethernet). I am gathering information to find out:

- what vendor & model WAP to get for my PC & Laptop running Linux.
- the best wireless card for the PC.
- what will it take to get the laptop's built-in wireless controller to work under Linux.

Good luck and hope your setup goes well. I spent 2 days struggling to get my linksys card working. I was quite annoyed because if I had got the right instructions right from the beginning it could have taken me just 10 minutes to get it up and running. Anyway after trawling through many articles on google and lots of trial and error, I got it working fine on Suse 10.

I am running a Cisnet-80 laptop that uses the AMD Turion 64 processor. My OS is SuSe 10.0.

I live in the boondies so I have to use Direcway for broadband access. The current model satellite modem/router I use is the new dw7000.

I recently purchased the D-Link Dl-634M wireless 108G MIMO router. Information I got from Dway says the modem/router can be used with a wireless router to set up wireless access.

I downloaded ndiswrapper 1.6 (stable release) after checking the wiki site and verfifying that the BCM4318 is supported. I went back and got the 80211g.zip file and extracted its contents.

I installed ndiswrapper with no errors. I used ndiswrapper to install the bcmwl5.inf file, making sure to do this in the same directory as the SYS file is in. All went well with no errors.

As per OEM instructions, the laptop is connected via an ethernet cable to the router to configure the router settings (however, I did not connect it to the satellite modem yet). I followed the OEM instructions and set up the router.

Then, I proceeded to configure the laptop wireless device. Using Yast2 the settings are:

Network Device = wlan0
Setup Method = Automatic Address Setup (via DHCP)
Subnet Mask = 255.255.255.0
Host Name and Domain Name: I left at system defaults (same as eth0)
Change Host Name via DHCP: enabled
Update Name Servers and Search List via DHCP: enabled
Routing: set to 192.168.0.XXX (same as addr set on router)
Configuration Name = wlan0
Module Name = ndiswrapper
DHCP Client Options: Request Broadcast Response =(On), Host Name to Send =(Auto).
Device Activation = At boot time.
Firewall Zone = external.
Operating Mode = Managed.
Authentification Mode = WPA-PSK
Key Input Type = Passphrase
Encryption Key = 21 alphanumeric symbols.

Using the ethernet connection I can access the router settings web page. But, I am getting no connection using the wireless device. Help!

P.S. - The wireless device functioned under Win-XP. The eth0 connection works flawlessly.

Update on my June 2003 post: Broadcom BCM4318, SuSe 10.0, Ndiswrapper and DW7000

I purchased a D-Link DWL-G650 wireless card. The system recognized the card and I was up and running without any "tweaking."

There are now workarounds for the BCM4318 that can be found online. However, I have had no success with any of them. Thus, I am sticking with the DWL-G650 because "it just works."

However, the same success story can not be said of SuSE 10.1. See my posts under the 10 1 suse tag.
