Broadcom (Dell) 1390 WLAN Mini-Card in FC7
Hey. I'm completely noobtastic to Linux. I'm having issues with my cheap-o laptop's wireless card using Fedora Core 7.
It's the standard issue Broadcom (Dell) 1390 WLAN Mini-Card.
I was wondering if anyone had any info on how to get this to work. I hate bringing my usb adapter around everywhere I go now =P

If you do a little searching around here, you'll find a fair bit of info on getting Broadcom cards to work. You essentially have two paths you can follow:
1) Bcm43xx - This is the native Linux driver for Broadcom cards. The kernel module is almost certainly installed on your machine already, but the firmware the card needs probably isn't. If you visit my help site, you'll find a section on using a program called fwcutter to create the firmware files you need. The downsides to bcm43xx is that it doesn't work well with all chipsets and it is limited to 802.11b speeds.
2)Ndiswrapper - This provides an environment where Windows drivers can function under Linux. The best installation instructions for this are in the ndiswrapper wiki, and there are Fedora specific instructions there. The downside to ndiswrapper is that Fedora has traditionally done some things that have made ndiswrapper difficult to install and run. If you need to go this route, I would seriously consider switching distros unless you're comfortable with compiling your own kernel or using non-Fedora kernels.
One thing to keep in mind is that while you can have both bcm43xx and ndiswrapper installed on your machine at the same time, you can only have one loaded at any given time. If you have both loaded they will conflict and the card won't work.
When using my usb adapter it shows my Broadcom device but it won't connect and it disappears when I disconnect my usb adapter. I'm looking more so into this.
I ran the cutter program into the /lib/firmware and currently copying the same files to /lib/hotplug/firmware and will see what results that yields.
By the way, what is the chipset in this thing?
