Bizarre: can't open google, yahoo; other sites fine

I have a completely baffling problem: As of about a week ago, I am unable to open a small number of popular websites, such as google, in either Firefox or Konquer under FC4.

Here is what it looks output like in lynx:
Code:
$ lynx google.com

Looking up google.com first
Looking up google.com
Making HTTP connection to google.com
Sending HTTP request.
HTTP request sent; waiting for response.
HTTP/1.0 301 Moved Permanently
Data transfer complete
HTTP/1.0 301 Moved Permanently
Using http://www.google.com/
Looking up www.google.com
Making HTTP connection to www.google.com
At this point, it sleeps for a couple of minutes, then displays this error message:

Code:
Alert!: Unable to connect to remote host.
I can ping google. I can also enter 216.239.37.99, and the google home page is dispayed almost instantly. google.com also opens fine on a Mac in the same home network with an ADSL connection.

I am quite at a loss as to what could be going on. Anyone have any ideas?

Hi,

the cause of this may be in your hosts file.
open /etc/hosts and check if you have entries about the websites.

If you see lines containing www.google.com, remove them.
