update 3: today, no wlan0 internet access after rebooting. KNetworkManager shows the wireless connection. But Firefox is somehow blocked from accessing the internet. Back to square one. Cannot "reset" KNetworkManager to get the wireless working. At least I know the drivers and hardware are all ok...

On Suse, what alternatives are there to connecting without the underlying NetworkManager? Is there any other application to download?

Really, the best thing here is to avoid NetworkManager, Yast and all that graphical manure. Stick with a console, at least it will tell you what is going wrong. Post the output of iwconfig and make sure that your configuration is correct. If it is, have a look at ifconfig and see if you have an IP address. Also, look at the output of route -n to see if your gateway is correct. Those three things should give us an idea of where things are going kablooie.

Working fine

All has been well, using the networkmanager applet on suse10.2/gnome. Basic yast install setting up a new wlan0 - configure: User controlled with network manager - auto address setup via DHCP.
Appreciate everybody's time :-)
