BCM43xx Complications

Ok first time setting up Gentoo. Or even touching this laptop (Acer Aspire 3004)

I've got some complications. I'm not even sure where to begin.

I've been doing alot of reading for this. Somewhere I read that hdparm has to be on or it could create the type of problems I'm seeing.

but whenever I switch it on this happens

Quote:
tux ~ # hdparm -d 1 /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
setting using_dma to 1 (on)
HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted
using_dma = 0 (off)
tux ~ #
I've got all the right modules loaded in my kernel. (to the best of my knowledge)

so how do I get hdparm to turn on? do you know anything else I should try... or maybe a good doc I should read. i'm not against RTFM

oh heres my /etc/conf.d/wireless

Quote:
tux ~ # cat /etc/conf.d/wireless | grep -v '#'

essid_eth1="MYESSID"

iwpriv_eth1=""
iwpriv_ESSID=(
"set AuthMode=WPAPSK"
"set EncrypType=TKIP"
"set WPAPSK=00xxxx0x0"
)

sleep_scan_eth1="1"

associate_timeout_eth1="5"

preferred_aps=( "MYESSID" )
I'm not sure if anyone can help me.... or if I will still have the problem when I receive an answer... but maybe this will help someone else someday.

The bcm43xx kernel module has transmission power issues for the Broardcom 4318 wireless device, best to blacklist it and use ndiswrapper with the Windows XP driver. FYI: eth1 becomes wlan0 when using ndiswrapper.

If you need the Windows XP driver (the 802bg.zip file) it can be found here;
