Question Attempting to make WMP54Gv4 connect

Just today I started Linux with UBUNTU 9.04. I have a WMP54Gv4 wireless card I would like to use. I have not found a suitable driver and do not know how to install it if I can obtain it. Others have posted messages about this card, but I don't know how to proceed. This is my first experience with Linux and will appreciate any suggestions to help get my system working well.

Try installing a newer version of Ubuntu (possibly the latest stable one, 10.04 LTS) and see then if the card works.

And here's the card in the HCL:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/hcl/sh...ct/309/cat/144

Apparently, you need NDISWrapper to get it to work. Good luck.

WMP54Gv4 Update

After upgrading to UBUNTU 10.04, I still do not have wireless connectivity with my WMP54Gv4. I found an old post entitled HOWTO: Linksys WMP54G PCI Wireless Adapter on Ubuntu (Gutsy). That post gave a location to download an XP driver which was done. The .exe file is on my desktop. Then it directed me to the ndiswrapper home page to download their latest release which was done. The latest version is also on my desktop. Then I was confused with the next instructions: "fire up a terminal, navigate to the folder with ndiswrapper". Then a series of four commands were given:
1. tar zxvf ndiswrapper-version.tar.gz
2. sudo make uninstall
3. sudo make
4. sudo make install
I did not understand these and did not proceed further. It seems the object of these commands was to install ndiswrapper.
The next step was to install the driver using the line:
ndiswrapper -1 ~/desktop/WMP54version/Drivers/WMP54G/Rt2500.INF
I do not know how to execute the previous line.
Finally the instructions are to load the ndiswrapper module:
sudo modprobe ndiswrapper
I do not know how to execute the previous line.
There are subsequent instructions, but if I can understand the previous instructions, I feel it will be possible for me to proceed.
Can someone help me understand how to use the instructions given?

This week I will work on the suggestions from Kenny Strawn. In upgrading to Ubuntu 10.04, I lost sound on my system. With some troubleshooting, I found the software setting that caused the problem. Perhaps it was changed during the installation of 10.04. Being suspicious of the hardware, I spent too much time checking out the pieces using the troubleshooting guide in Ubuntu. Now I can get back to the wireless issue with the WMP54Gv4!

A lot of help has been offered on this thread. I appreciate it a lot. Unfortunately, being such a newbie, I am asking for additional help. I have downloaded NDIS WRAPPER and RutilTv0.06. I saved them to a folder on my system and extracted their files to their folders. Detailed instructions on how to proceed would be appreciated. I am more confident that my WMP54Gv4 card can be installed and allow me to connect my system wirelessly. I am now running Ubuntu 10.04 and see a new version (10.10) has recently been made available. I don't know if it has any relation to my wireless effort.
Thanks again to all who have helped.

When connected to Ethernet, run the following commands at the shell:

Code:
sudo apt-get install ndiswrapper ndisgtk
cd rutiltv0.06
./configure
make
make install
The reason why I posted the first command is because NDISWrapper is in the Ubuntu repositories. However, I'm not so sure about the other thing, which is why I posted source build instructions. If ./configure fails, it should tell you what's wrong. Post the output.

Kenny,

I opened a terminal and entered the command as given below:

david@david:~$ sudo apt-get install ndiswrapper ndisgtk
[sudo] password for david:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package ndiswrapper

The commends are typed into the system using the terminal screen. Is this what you suggested: "When connected to Ethernet, run the following commands at the shell:"?

You stated that NDISWrapper was in the Ubuntu repositories, but Ubuntu must need more information to find it.
If NDISWrapper cannot be found, can the other instructions still be used successfully?

Thank you,

dfiggy

Kenny,

I don't know where my previous reply went. It was a "Quick Reply".
Basically, I have had success in connecting my WMP54GV4 card to my wireless network. Using the Ubuntu help system, I installed the ndisgtk package, opened the package and selected my INF file from the disk supplied with the card. I installed the card and after entering the MAC address, the SSID (the network name) and the WEP code, I was able to connect to my network. My hope is the WEP code is retained by the system, but if need be, I can enter it after each boot up.

Thank you for all of your help. I will learn the CLI instructions later since I don't need them right now.
This should complete the thread.
