I do
modprobe ath_pci and I get this error message

last few lines of dmesg
ath_pci: mosule license 'enspecified' taints kernel.
ath_pci: Unknown symbol "init_module, cleanup_module"

You may need to unmask it... run emerge --search madwifi-driver madwifi-tools

run emerge --sync if it's been a long time you didn't run that command
