Atheros AR5008, OpenSuse 10.3 (X86-64), ASUS C90S, AR5416.sys
With regard to LINUX I am more a Newbie than an expert, therfore I will need your help setting up my wireless connection.
Requirements / Prerequisites:
I have just set up my ASUS C90S in a Triple Multi Boot configuration with VISTA-32, WXP-32 and OpenSuse x86-64. The C90S is equipped with a built-in AR 5008 Adapter. C90S is a good recommendation - besides. The only disadvantage is energy consumption ...!
Wirless connections are fine with both windows plattforms, using AR5416.sys!
Then I have tried NDIS-Wrapper and MADwifi installing with LINUX - failed both. Of course I have checked prerequisites before, both signalling problems in advance, so the results are:
NDISwrapper tells me incompliance of AR5416.sys with 64bit (yes ...!), therefore I have tried MADWifi now - fails again.
Ath0 and Wifi0 are not mentioned (recognized ?) in logging during installation steps ...! No idea, what these logicals are for ?
I know very well that ChipSet AR 5008 is not mentioned on http://madwifi.org/wiki/Compatibility/Atheros ... being compatible (yet?)!
Neverthless I had assumed that AR 5008 has not been tested yet rather being not coded in MADWifi ...!
Would you recommend to wait for next MADwifi release also mentioning expressively AR 5008 as a compatible chipset or is there any chance (with more efforts being invested in reading documentations and retrieving this wonderful forum - working for solutions, also asking for your help ?) Generally: is each chip set coded seperately in MADwifi ?
What is your feeling / recommendations / experiences with ATHEROS and MADWifi. If you say, there is a good chance right now to give it further attempts although 5008 is not released yet then I will invest more time in research and posting the logging of the MADWifi installation messages as a next step.
Besides - did anyone of you get this chipset working with your LINUX system? What was the trick ...?
I still rely in ATHEROS being a dedicated Wifi technology platform for LINUX distributions ...! Hopefully the MADwifi code will also support the AR 5008 chip set in future ... (AR 5007 is the last line in the 500x compatibility list)!
Thanks in advance, any answer is appreciated.
... oooh: bad luck. The atheros drivers have been removed from openSUSE as of 10.1 due to "licensing issues".
ndiswrapper is an implimentation of the win32 api ... no wonder you have trouble with in on 64bit. Of course, you could always just use 32 bit openSUSE ... it should actually run better without the extra-big numbers.
Anyway, ndiswrapper works with the *.inf files... so the .sys you used may just be the wrong file, or you may need others.
You found the .sys file from windows driver details... now you need to use the Windows "Search" functionality to find the corresponding *.inf file, which is nothing more than a simple text file (try opening one!) with a list of all the required driver files.
When you've found it, look inside the *.inf file with a text editor and see if you need to find any more files. If you're lucky, everything should be in a single directory (for example C:\Program Files\Atheros\Drivers\).
You probably have more than one version of the driver and .inf files - at least vista and xp. The driver disk (if you got one) may also have Win98 and others. Not all of them will work well (or at all) so if one doesn't go, try another.
... i a nice long discussion involving AR5008 cards with ndiswrapper. It should go.
