a non supported wireless network card issue

Hello world,

I am using a PC computer with Windows XP SP2 on one partition and I have just recently installed Fedora 7 on an another partition in the same drive. Everything worked out ok so far except my connection to the internet. Apparently, my wireless card is not being detected with Fedora. Note that in Windows, My connection is fine. So i looked around a bit and read up about a Ndiswrapper Project. So i still have a shot. right? Looking for some help thru this. New in Linux.

I have an Asus P5W DH Deluxe motherboard with the wifi-ap solo technology.
Under my device manager network adapters it shows that i have a Realtek RTL8187 wireless 802.11g 54mbps usb 2.0 network adapter.

Your first step is to run "lspci -v" and "lspci -n". Then using the device information look in this sites HCL and search on google to find if there is a driver that you can use. For ndiswrapper, you can to their site and check for your device there. If it uses a Broadcom controller, then you might be able to use either bcm43xx or ndiswrapper. The bcm43xx & ndiswrapper documentation (installed with the package) may even list where to go to download a windows driver that is known to work. Then you either wrap the driver (as you know with ndiswrapper), or run a utility to cut out the firmware.

I don't have Fedora 7. The bcm43xx driver may have been renamed in your kernel version.

I made a mistake in my fist posting stating that i was using my D-link wireless g adapter but that is what i was using before i bought my new motherboard (which included wifi ap solo wireless technology). So i edited my fist posting with the right information this time. Apologies.

Would your instructions still apply?

USB Wireless devices are a big petpeeve with me. Why don't people get proper pci cards or pcmcia cards for laptops?

Anyway, here is the section of the Linux Wireless Howto that mentions your device and two alternate drivers:
http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Jean_...#RealTek80211g

This howto it kept current. You may need a 2.6.23 or newer kernel for at least one of these kernel drivers.

I've followed your link and found it to be quite helpful. Thanks.

In my first post i stated that i was using a PC not a laptop just to alert you. Would all this apply anyway? I kind of figured that Linux was gonna be a bit more particular than Windows with all of my hardware.

With Windows i had no probs so this is why i used the realtek... after all it came with the motherboard right?

Buying an appropriate wireless adapter that is Linux (Fedora) friendly however, isn't such a bad idea. Can you refer to me some good ones or should i just look on the Fedoras wireless List of known cards and just pick one?

Thanks Jschiwall for your help.
