802.11g clients w/ 802.11b access point

Quick Question:

If I have two 802.11g clients on a network with a 802.11b access point, will the clients be able to connect to each other at the "g" speed, or does the signal go through the access point limiting the speed to "b" speeds?

Moved: This thread is more suitable in Wireless Networking and has been moved accordingly to help your thread/question get the exposure it deserves.

If they are in managed mode then the communication will have to go through the access point.

I did some research and learned about ad-hoc mode. I found that this is basically an access point-less network, but even in this case, if one 802.11b client exists, the speeds are reduced to this speed.

This really isn't the answer to my question, but it got me wondering, are managed mode and ad-hoc the only two modes?
Does "with an access point" always mean "managed mode" or is there an another "mode" that also includes an access point?
