VMware Workstation - Red hat Linux 5.4 filesize problem

I want to install Red hat linux 5.4 on my VMware workstation. I had installed it and it worked fine but the filesize of linux was not as per my requirements. It (VMware) only gave 3GB to my root (/) which is very less. How can i adjust filesize of linux while installing it on VMware.

You need to appreciate the different layers here and what is related to what. Vmware has no idea in any way about the partitions inside a VM.
