vmware work without Graphical User Interface(GUI) display

Hi all, I try to start a virtual machine on remote host using vmplayer.
The remote host runs CentOs 5.2 under runlevel 3(thus no GUI present). The virtual machine failed to boot due to lack of GUI.

I know xen is the best choice, but the remote host is out of my control. I can only use vmware, or some other application-level virtual machine manager.

Please give me advice. Much obliged!

vmplayer requires an X server to be running. Any chance you could get Xvfb or Xvnc installed on the remote host?

Thanks! I have installed Xvfb and Xvnc on the remote host, and now I start virtual machine using the following command:
[root@xentest vm]# Xvfb :0 &
[1] 4923
[root@xentest vm]# DISPLAY=:0 vmplayer vm1.vmx

And I get lots of error message like this:
FreeFontPath: FPE "unix/:7100" refcount is 2, should be 1; fixing.
FreeFontPath: FPE "unix/:7100" refcount is 2, should be 1; fixing.

modinfo: could not find module vmmon
modinfo: could not find module vmnet
modinfo: could not find module vmblock
modinfo: could not find module vmci
modinfo: could not find module vsock
... ...

It appears neither Xvfb nor vmplayer works correctly. It appears that vmplayer was not installed correctly, I doubt vmplayer can not even be installed without X server.

I have little experience on Xvfb and Xvnc, I'll google it.

Just a stupid question.
How did you install xvnc and xvfb if the machine is not under your control?
Virtualbox can be run headless (without gui) and supports vmwares vmdk-images.
