virtual machine on Slackware - guidance requested
With a small gaggle of Slackware boxes, mostly running 13.37, and a desire to use some analysis programs and applications in a mostly Linux environment.
Can anyone offer some high level guidance a to what open source or at least free to use software might be available. The windows applications desired are presently working under XP and Win 7. A year or so ago, I tried running one of the applications under Wine, and it did not work, so I have assumed that Wine may not be my best choice. Searching the archives, I find that virtualbox was recommended, generally, about two years ago. I know things change, and that's why I'm asking. Any pointers our high level guidance? Thanks. |
I use Virtualbox on Slackware 13.37 and Slackware -current without any problems.

Which installation for VirtualBox did you use, or did you simply build it on Slackware?
|
I use the standard installer from their website, the one for "All distributions", works fine.

Installed VirtualBox, using the method you suggested. It did install painlessly.
Most of my machines don't have a CD/DVD drive...is there a way I can remotely use a CD on another machine (running NFS, etc.) so I can install Win 7 or XP on my virtual machines, where the physical machine lacks a CD? |
Just make an ISO image of your Windows CD/DVD. Any CD/DVD burning solution should be able to do it. You can use those images to install Windows into your virtual machines.

By the way, A year is a long time in Wine Project. Try Wine again before going Virtual Boxes.

I'll check out WINE again, when I get a newer version for Slackware. I installed VirtualBox, and it appears to do what I want. I will, however, have to move my applications to a machine with more than 2GB RAM, as Win7 appears to be a memory hog extraordinaire.
Thanks for the pointers and suggestions, your assistance has been helpful. |
