snmpd dead but pid file exists

Running into an issue where snmpd quickly dies after start with the error on status:
snmpd dead but pid file exists

I have gone through the remove/reinstall and confirmed at latest for the distro I am on which works fine for all my other devices and virtual containers.

Here is info on my environment.
The failures are on OpenVZ virtual containers running CentOS 5.5 and yum update shows all up to date.

[root@test snmp]# yum list installed |grep snmp
net-snmp.x86_64 1:5.3.2.2-9.el5_5.1 installed
net-snmp-libs.x86_64 1:5.3.2.2-9.el5_5.1 installed
net-snmp-utils.x86_64 1:5.3.2.2-9.el5_5.1 installed

My snmpd.conf file is very basic and is the same as on all the other systems that are not having issues.

It's just rocommunity myusername xx.xx.xx.xx <--IP of server that gathers the snmpd data.

When running a trace to see what happens when it dies I see a floating point exception error.
Program received signal SIGFPE, Arithmetic exception.

Any info on how I can trouble shoot this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Sounds like bug #578060:

http://www.mail-archive.com/debian-b...msg772859.html

Maybe your best bet is to:

a) de-install your current (binary) copy of net-snmp

b) download source for net-snmp 5.2.1 (which the bug report says *doesn't* exhibit the problem)

c) then build and install from source

'Hope that helps .. PSM

PS:
Alternatively, you might want to uninstall, then UPGRADE to the CURRENT release: 5.5

Either way - you can find source - and binaries - here:

http://www.net-snmp.org/download.html
