Poor performance with VirtualBox on a Pentium 4

Running VirtualBox on a Ubuntu host, with an old Pentium 4, I find that a Windows XP VM runs quite well, but all the versions of Linux I have tried are very slow. Something to do with tickless kernels? Is there a way to get an improvement?

If you have model 662 or 672 you can enable VT-x in BIOS:

Older Pentium 4's don't make particularly good virtualization platforms. OK perhaps for a command-line only server install to learn about networking etc., but probably not the best choice for a full-featured Gnome or KDE desktop environment like Ubuntu, Fedora, Slackware, etc.

The exact model is needed to decide for sure.

XP is generally better suited to VM's. It may be a faster os by default and most VM's were created in order to run MS.
