LXLE icons vanish under VirtualBox (Mac OS X 10.7 host)

I got something weird happening with LXLE (Lubuntu running 12.04 LTS) running in the latest (as far as I know) Virtual Box. The host is a 2009 vintage iMac running Lion (10.7.5). It does work when I start it up.

However, if I minimize the VBox window and leave it that way for a while, when I restore the window and click on an icon, all the icons on the desktop disappear. Same thing when I click anywhere on the panel on the bottom. All I'm left with is the desktop wallpaper and nothing will respond. I have to do a reboot of the VM to get things back to some semblance of normal.

Is this normal behavior for VirtualBox?
