LXC: 10.04 guest can access VT's but 12.04 guest cannot?

I'm running a couple of LXC guest on an Ubuntu 12.04.2 host. The 10.04 guests can access the VT's(text) just fine. However, the 12.04 guest cannot. The only thing I can find in syslog which looks relevant is:

Feb 2 22:52:11 lts console-kit-daemon[797]: WARNING: Could not determine active console Feb 2 22:52:11 lts console-kit-daemon[797]: WARNING: Error waiting for native console 21 activation: Invalid argument Feb 2 22:52:11 lts console-kit-daemon[797]: WARNING: Error waiting for native console 25 activation: Invalid argument ... ...

I've followed the same routine as for the 10.04 guest and double checked it several times for errors. The only difference I noticed with the config files is the 12.04 file has this line:

lxc.devttydir = lxc

Whereas the 10.04 config file has this line

lxc.devttydir =

I tried changing it and it made no difference.

All guests were created using the Ubuntu templates.

Any help greatly appreciated.

PS. I post a question previously about X output. This is the same guest. I stepped back and tried the text console which don't work either. Hence It seems it's a more general issue than just X output.
