KVM Beginner: clarification of components

Hi Group,

I'm using Slackware 13 64-bit.
My cpu is: AMD Athlon 64 x2 2.5Ghz.
I am using kernel 2.6.32.8 from kernel.org
I've compiled every KVM option I could find directly into the kernel.
Items such as:

Processor types and features >> Paravirtualized guest support >> KVM Guest Support

Virtualization >> Kernel-based virtual machine support and KVM for AMD processors support

I'm looking at the slackbuilds.org repository under "kvm" - http://slackbuilds.org/result/?search=kvm&sv=13.0

If I'm understanding correctly, the items I need to install are: kvm and qemu-kvm.

Do I need to install kvm-kmod?
Isn't this what I already built into my current kernel?

Thanks for your help.

I also use Slackware64-13.0 and Slackware-13.0 with KVM. I use the stock generic kernel and the KVM modules that come with Slackware. All I need to install is qemu-kvm from SlackBuilds.org.

The kvm-kmod slackbuild is for replacing the stock KVM modules that come with Slackware for more recent versions. No need to do that unless you are missing something in the newer KVM kernel code.

You'll always need to install qemu-kvm since that doesn't come with Slackware.

It's not recommended by the folks at KVM to compile KVM into the kernel. May I ask why you using 2.6.32.8 and compiling KVM into the kernel?

Ah, I'm glad you mentioned this.
Thanks for your response; it's a big help to get confirmation on new concepts.

I upgraded my kernel because I couldn't get my onboard NIC to function with the kernel version in Slack 13. It's a vexing problem many have had with nvidia MCP55 motherboards. The new kernel worked so I stayed with it.

I had no particular reason for compiling kvm into the kernel.....I just seem to do that with items I think I'll need often. But after your thoughtful guidance, I'll re-compile kvm items as modules.

Best regards.

I highly suggest you consider running Slackware-current which has kernel 2.6.32.7 and should support your on-board NIC as well as 2.6.32.8. The other benefit is you are running what eventually will be Slackware 13.1 when it's ready to be released.
