KVM - Adding a CPU fails / prevents startup

Hi,

Details:
I am having a problem with KVM, I am running:
Code:
virsh # version
Compiled against library: libvir 0.9.4
Using library: libvir 0.9.4
Using API: QEMU 0.9.4
Running hypervisor: QEMU 0.12.1
On IBM 1U server...a 3550 M3.

I am only running 3 small vm guests on this host which is a 12 core box with 24 GB of memory.

My problem:
When I try to add a vcpu to one of my guests it will hang at the linux "waiting for drivers to initialize" phase of the boot up.

I have tried using virsh edit, and recreating the .xml file with multiple cpu's but it always fails to boot until i revert back to 1 vCPU.

My .xml file only has the following for CPU:
Code:
 <vcpu>1</vcpu>
  <os>
    <type arch='i686' machine='rhel6.2.0'>hvm</type>
    <boot dev='hd'/>
  </os>
My real question:
How do I get this guest to see more than 1 vCPU?

Thanks.

When you compiled qemu, did you use the compile option "--enable-io-thread"?
Try to create an instance directly from qemu and make sure your '-smp' switch is set to something other than '1'('0' is probably not the way to go with this either, try 2).
