How Do EC2 Instances share Resources?

For example, say you have an autoscaling group that is set to create 5 instances when the max cpu usage is >=60 for x amount of time. How does firing up more servers relieve cpu usage on the original instance? Is that called parallel processing? Does the first instance start farming out processes to the new instances, or is it that new loads that come in are spread out among the new instances thus letting the original instance level out?
