Fresh copy of Ubuntu 10.04. Performed all updates. Installed VMtools. Downloaded Boxee 0.9 Beta and installed. Started Boxee and it lags out the system so bad it won't run. I'm guessing it uses opengl?
Looking for some feedback from anyone who has tried this or something similar.
Answered my own opengl question, was looking around the Boxee site.
Hardware Requirements*
* x86 (Intel/AMD processor) based system running at 1.0GHz or greater
* 512MB system memory (RAM) or more
Video Card*
Graphics controller/card/adapter and device drivers capable of:
* OpenGL 1.4 (+ GLSL) or higher (please read this for further info regarding Boxee and OpenGL).
* Direct X 9.0 (Windows)
* 32-bit colors or more
* these are minimums, to reap the full benefits and power of Boxee to view HD video use this Suggested Hardware.
Software Requirements
Boxee currently runs on the following systems:
* Windows XP\Vista\7 (32-bit & 64-bit)
* Mac OS X 10.4 or higher (Intel processor based only)
* Ubuntu Linux (32-bit & 64-bit), with libvdpau1 installed

You may be able to determine the cause of the system lag. One reason for slowing system is wait-io. It can be described as "cycles the cpu has to wait performing the next action waiting on an io operation to complete", another one is steal-io which can be described as "cycles the cpu has to wait performing the next action while waiting on the physical cpu to allocate time". The latter will only exist on virtual machines, as physical machines do not have to wait for time to be allocated to their physical cpu.
The cause of the 1st one can be various (bad disk image type for example :-o) but often is caused by swapping. If swapping is occurring, it means you have not allocated enough memory. Solution: allocate more memory.
If steal-io is too high (about 1-2% is often normal) your host system is too busy. You can try to make it's life easier. Commands like top and sar report this statistic.
Now another reason may be that the application performs 3d operations, where your virtual video card cannot do this, so it must be done on software level, meaning making the cpu (very) busy. If possible you can allocate more cpu power? Or not run this application on a virtual machine ;-)
