Adding Extra CPU to SUSE Linux on VM - ESX

If I add another CPU to a linux VM, what needs to be done for the OS to realize there is an extra one? Any modifications needed on the kernel level?

cat /proc/cpuinfo only shows "processor 0"

Ahhh... VMware, it's a beautiful thing.

If you are running vSphere (ESX 4) you can hot-plug CPU's (as long as you're running an SMP kernel!)...
It's just a matter of modifying a text file.

Have a butchers at:
http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-10493

Have fun!

Oops... We got v3.5 not v4 yet. Anyway, I "heard" I need to upg the kernel to smp. I am researching on that right now.

Can't wait for ESX v4!

I found two interesting posts with the info needed:

http://forums.novell.com/novell-prod...e-upgrade.html

http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/tip/16262.html

I installed the kernel-smp module and now my VM is running with two processors. Simple and easy!
