Steps to change DVD drive in KVM/qemu VM after HW upgrade?

I had an IDE DVD writer in my computer (Fedora 12 x64), but then upgraded to a SATA BRD writer. I have a Windows 7 x64 VM running on top of Fedora. I made what I thought were the appropriate changes to the items IDE Disk 1 and SCSI Disk 1 on the page View | Details. Since I did that, I have had trouble seeing DVDs that are inserted in these drives from within the VM.
Could I have done something wrong?
Does anyone know what the proper procedure to follow in the VM after HW changes are made in the computer running the host OS?
Would it be better to create a new VM?
Can I create a new VM pointing to the same data on the hard disk?
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Tom
