Hi I am trying to use linux inside windows at my work

I install succesfull qemu and run knoopix without problem.
But I need some way to comunicate with windows machine.


I do not have the root windows password because is a big company.

I want to work with my files using the linux tools (awk etc)
and after write in my hard disk and read in windows

Is there some way to do this?

But, seriously, all the essential GNU tools are also available as windows builds, just use them. One nice source is MSYS (google it). You can then use them directly from CMD, or, if you really need a more powerful unix shell, install bash and use that.

Yes I try the ms dos solution but it is no so good like linux.

And yes Normally for this work I use unix. But because cost reduction I have a windows machine now.

But I cannot run all my scripts that save a lot of time. So I test linux and is really good solution the linux inside the windows but because I am no root I cannot communicate with windows.

What I tried to say in my first post is you don't need another OS in a virtual machine to run all your scripts -- all needed tools are available for windows, too.

I have not tried to run Knoppix as a virtual machine - usually just run it from a CD - but since you have it running OK the next step is to move files from and to the physical Windows PC. Here are a couple of possibilities.

If you have a USB flash drive (pen drive, memory stick or what ever you call it) - Insert the drive while Knoppix is running. Knoppix should detect the drive and mount it. Copy your files to the USB drive. You can then unmount or eject it from Knoppix. When you return to Windows, unplug and plug in the drive. Windows should detect it and you can copy your files to the Windows hard drive. I have done this between virtual machines and it seems to work.

A second approach would be to use Samba to connect to a share on the Windows machine. The Samba client program "smbclient" should be installed in Knoppix. It can be run from a shell. I use the Samba server on Linux to allow Windows machines to connect but I have little experience with the Samba client on the Linux side. I cannot tell you the correct syntax. It might be worth some research.

I would NOT recommend allowing Knoppix to mount the hard drive in the Windows machine while Windows is running. I fear that would do bad things.

Yes I believe the best way is making the comunication with samba.
But I no sucess yet.
I no have to much experience with samba.

Using usb to interchange files is too slow.

Your question has made me curious so I decided to give the Samba client a try on my system. For reference, here is a good summary of the smbclient syntax: http://tldp.org/HOWTO/SMB-HOWTO-8.html

First of all you need to be able to connect to a share on your Windows machine. Can you test from another Windows machine? If not, here are a couple of things to check (at least no Win XP)

1 - Open explorer, and select Tools; Folder Options; View. At the very bottom of the list uncheck [ ] Use simple file sharing and Apply. I often forget this one.

2 - Create a shared folder on your Windows machine.

3 - If you still cannot connect to the shared folder from another machine see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304040

Once you can connect to the shared folder from a Windows machine you can connect with smbclient. Open a command window in your Linux virtual machine and type "smbclient -L machinename" where machine name is the name of your Windows machine. You will be prompted for your Windows password. Here is an example where my Windows machine is named taylor11 The key thing I am looking for here is the line which tells me there is a share called "work". Here is how I connect to the share and get a directory listing You can now use standard ftp syntax to put and get files to/from your Windows share.
