Hey there people!!

Hi,
Again I am sorry for the non-participatory schedule. It is cool that we have found new people and kept talking...exept me:-)

I just got home from playing a gig at "The Last Exit", we played well and I didn't butcher anything:-)

Just out of curiosity, do any of you know of any Linux users in the PHX area? or am I the only one? I think I am, I have yet to meet anyone who actually runs Linux on one of their machines.

Understand, I have nothing against Tucson, its just hard for me to get away with School and Work and Band.

In case I do not get a chance, I want to wish you all a Happy and Safe Christmas. Christmas is my Sister's B-Day, so for me at least, I have to try and find a decent B-Day card somewhere:-)

I have to work tomorrow so I am off to bed...stupid job. LOL!!

I don't check my PMs but you can email me at my username @ yahoo dot com.... I would be more then happy to help any of you switch or just meet up at Barnes once in awhile to talk about tips or tricks..

Im still working on the iptables issue and the apm/acpi the only thing I've found so for was this http://www.cae.wisc.edu/site/public/?title=liniptables and it helped alot but I've yet to write my own script.
Any ways you still on SuSE? It's a good distro I havent checked it out in awhile I was thanking about installing it soon but I have to reconfigure my partition scheme which I dont really want to do, well see, anyways good to here from every one time for family stuff (girlfriends family) wish me luck

Man I honestly don't mind running over with my Debian net install and fixing you up good. I got it down pretty well and can do the whole install in about an hour. I've been running it pretty much without flaw for over a year. This includes limewire, mplayer and the works. I've had issues getting my USB to work though.. Why don't we set up a meet at say Barnes and Nobile in the next week..

I don't check this much so please email me with any info or call me if you have any questions at 829-fourtytwo seventyfour..

Sick as a Dog!!

Hi all,

Apparently if I do not work or go to school enough, I get sick as all hell. I do not know how I did it, but while not going anywhere or seeing anyone on the 25th, I got really effing sick.

I feel a little better today,

Chemichael: the show was great, my friend Damion, whom I am playing for while he is in Iraq, was in town for 10 days and he was at the show. I was nervous playing in front of him. I didn't want to fuck up and have him think, "What have I done?". He has never tried to stress me out, just me stressing on me.

I am still runing SuSE 10.0, I have to tell you, exept for the triple brown-out we had about a week ago, and the damage it did to our network equiptment, I am like a pig in shit. No crashes or anything of note, besides me still learning basic and not so basic stuff. But then again, we are all doing that, aren't we?

Scott

This is the first time I have saw 'local' flavor. I am currently hanging around in Phoenix and love it. It is one of the truly cosmopolitan cities in the U.S.A I have ever been in. I ten to agree with Sharkscott about IM> It is a potential problem spot. I prefer e-mail, always have. It not only can be safe, it allows time for a comprehensive read and leads to better communication between parties. I have been 'experimenting' with live cds for the better part of 8 months and basically am looking for something simple to allow me to do my normal things computer wise ( e-mail, surf, documents work, a little chat, and research) without being strapped to the non-choices currently promoted by Microsoft et al. Open source is the highway for tomorrows genius and humanity's benefit and I roil at abusive business practises that tend to put a strangle hold on that. Mainly, I chomp at the bit over the idea that something I lay out hard earned money for carries with it stipulation on how I can use it or stipulation PERIOD! All of these live cds I have tried--> Kanotix, Knoppix, Simply Mepis, Zen, Mandows, Linux Console, Berry, Puppy, Damn Small Linux, PcLinux OS, Basilisk 1.4, Slax 5.0.5 , Navynos, Sam Mini, and Beatrix are not only MINE [lock stock and barrel], but have set me back a grand total of a little under $15. I have learned a considerable amount about Linux through experimenting with these disks, something that had I tried to do with Windows I would be financial depleted plus probably under some kind of arrest. Along those lines, I do not pass bad marks against Windows systems per se, they have helped spawn a much greater communications structure, I hold the marketing practises in disgust and will not be a slave to someone elses 'orders'. In all fairness, I can say that I have used Windows since the mid 1990's and suffered all the pitfalls that came with learing that operating system , to the extent that I did. My experience with Linux has been along similar lines. I do tend to 'dig in' a little more now and Linux certainly has plenty to dig in to. There have been peaks and valleys in my expereinces with BOTH systems. Windows has crashed more than I want to remember, I have had BIG problems installing Windows, both BEFORE and AFTER and often DURING the install. Almost NEVER have I did a fresh install on ANY machine that did not require driver downloads and installations and they can be to the point of painful in their refusals to co-operate. AS it stands now I run ONE 'Windows specific' application that Linux can't manhandle and I have just recently stumbled across a reasonable solution to that problem, after which Windows is bye-bye and Open source will be my ONLY source.
Linux has not been altogether pleasant either, but this is all part of a learning process and I can say that once a method is understood through trial and error with Linux, that the problem is cured and often the next step toward something better is revealed, making the experience somewhat addictive. With these live cds the main problem is that only certain ones will load on certain machines and not perform at all on others. Some of this is overcome with 'cheatcodes', some of it is caused by video inconsistencies, and some is relevant to whatever type of Linux is on the cd. I have four machines I experiment with and , to date, have only one successful install to hard drive. Some of this is because I , until recently, did not want to take a chance on destroying the Windows systems I have on the machines through my inexperience. I recently stumbled into some extra memory and hard drives and processors and am now fine tuning the situation. I installed Simply Mepis to a 6 gig Maxtor hard drive and it was as easy as pie. Everything works like a champ and I still have the live cd as well.
I have also experimented with 'embedded Linux'. I have Damn Small Linux embedded in my Win XP box and it runs in Qemu , literally 'inside' Windows XP. That has been the first solution to my problem of runnning Liux and my windows specific application simultaneously, but I want to do it the other way around and there are currently ways for that to happen as well, with better things just around the corner. Thus, I keep experimenting with Linux and having fun while doing it, plus grabbing a formal education from being enlisted in the Linux School of Hard Knox!!
Locally speaking, I have found that Americans do not tend to 'collect' together as much on the World Wide Web as do , say the Australians, or the Europeans. I do not have the answer to that question, but I was happy to see people other than myself in Arizona using Linux and responding in a great attitude.

Well thanks for your input (all of it) and I hope you continue to use GNU/linux for many years to come.
I have'nt had as many install issues or problems with the live CD's but not everyones me, but I guess I can understand seeing that you have so many pc's.
I noticed the small amount of posts you have on here, this is a very useful site and the it's also the main forum of Slackware, and has allot of useful info so if you have any trouble you can most likely find the answer here.
I agree with the fact that americans dont congagrate like the rest of the world but I believe that the answer to that is easy, we dont have to. I understand that in other countries the web is one of the only ways to communicate that doesnt cost a arm and a leg, as to us in america it doesnt matter every one has the internet, free long distance and the wonderful US postal service (almost everyone).
Enjoy your stay in phoenix and fell free to stopin here every once in while and say hello.

ya im here in tucson and ive been addicted since like 94-95 so yup there are some of us out here in the desert. I dont really deal with the linux groups out here cuz of the amateurish god complex some of the lusers have. I guess its just the age thing I dunno. Ppl seem to think linux is the god send to all their problems and bash ms all to hell. give em credit theyre not all that bad. they organize the masses of idiots that otherwise shouldnt be using computers and keep them in their playpin because the real world is too dangerous, they might fall into a kernel trap. Besides who has really used multics and os360/mvt(raises hand). Use the old then learn to appreciate the new. Respect is the key word. "Unix is simple, it just takes a genius to understand its simplicity!!" and remember that genius is subjective.
