Question I'm starting a LUG at my university and I need some help and ideas.

I'm trying to start a LUG at my university, but I'm having trouble getting everyone together. I sent an email to everyone asking for a time they would like to have our first meeting, and no one replied. I'm not really sure what to do. There's one other member that I talk with. He's helped me design posters and make decisions. But apparently he broke his laptops screen and hasn't been answering emails.

Anyways, I talked with the president of a local LUG, and he told me to have an online meeting. That does sound like a good idea, but I'm not sure how to go about having an online meeting. Do I make a irc? Get everyone to use one of the major IM protocols? Or have them join Google Wave?

What would you do? Does anyone have experience with starting or running a LUG?

ps
Google Wave is open to the public now.

linux is about freedom. if you want to start a lug just do it. if other people are reluctant to join, you can either invite them at gun point, or respect their opinions. I would do the latter.

just start your lug as if you already got a dozen members. run it. promote it. learn from it. if you do it good, others will join, even without gun pointing.

we all have our own lives to fill up.

you mention there already is another lug in your neighborhood. why not start as a special chapter of that lug?

That's what I'm doing...

I have about 7 people that are interested, but I'm having trouble getting them involved. To become an official campus org, we need to submit a form with everyone's name, rank, and phone number. I have everyone's name from the emails they sent me, but we need to have a meeting to decide ranks. We wanted to have a meeting on campus after finals, but no one replied to the email I sent out asking for a time that was good for them. I want to get the ball rolling on this before the fall semester. I'm not sure what I should do that this point.

Why not book a space for an initial try out - put up flyers, etc and make it clear that this is not the official meet it's just to gauge interest. Once you have a few people in person you should be able to get enough people to make up your organising committee (or whatever the college requires).

Thanks, that sounds like a good idea. Though I'll need to wait for the fall semester when there's more students on campus.

If you don't mind my asking, what university? Maybe some people on LQ would like to stop in and say "hello" to your LUG?

Regards,

Alunduil
