yum problems

Hi there,
I am running Fedora Core 6 and am fairly new to Linux.
I need to install Java run environment and to do so it would appear that I need yum to be working, it however is not.

Yum says that it can't find a valid baseurl. I had a similar problem with my UBuntu installation. That was easily fixed by changing the source of the mirror site.

How can one do this in Fedora Core 6.

I have looked to see that other simply deleted a # in front of the baseurl in the yum.repos .d, I tried this except FC6 won't let me edit any of the .repos.

Please can anyone suggest anything I can do?
Cheers

You need to be root to edit the repo files. Launch the editor you're using with this command (in this example I'll use gedit but you can change that):
Code:
su
gedit /etc/yum.repos.d/somereposityfile
that works if you have Gnome desktop (=gedit installed). Or just use some console editor like vim, nano, pico, emacs, ...

Java runtime environment can be found, for Linux, at Sun's java site (the same place where you can download it for Windows); there are installation instructions either at the site or inside the package you download.

Hi bOuncer,
I may sound like a complete moron, but there are still problems.

I edited the repos files in gedit like you said, but it still is not working.
This is what the terminal says when I try update.

[root@andrea-plos-93 yum.repos.d]# yum update
Loading "installonlyn" plugin
Setting up Update Process
Setting up repositories
Could not retrieve mirrorlist http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mir...re-6&arch=i386 error was
[Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error (-2, 'Name or service not known')>
Could not retrieve mirrorlist http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mir...-fc6&arch=i386 error was
[Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error (-2, 'Name or service not known')>
Error: Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: updates

What lines in the repos file do I need to update? Would it help if I posted the repos file with the changes.
I am sorry that you have to go quite slowly!

Thanks
