yum instead of yast

I wish to use yum instead of yast in suse 10. Can I use all of yums repositories for suse.

if so where is a list of yum repositories to install?

Is there a lot more app's than with just the yast respositories or can you only use yast reposits for yum?

How do I compile yum?

yum for suse really sucks, it does not work well at all, it just keeps trying to find the ftp site it takes for ever. You can use apt for suse too? And synaptics is a front end? would it not just download deb packages or are there suse rpm ports?

Maybe in yum I am doing something wrong? I put a small list of repositories in etc/yum/repos.d and I can see the commands that yum is issuing and the sites are in the command.
