YUM errors

Hi All,
when I tried to update with yum , it says the following error messages.
what could be the issus?

# yum list updates
Loaded plugins: fastestmirror
Determining fastest mirrors
YumRepo Error: All mirror URLs are not using ftp, http[s] or file.
Eg. $releasever is not a valid release or hasnt been released yet/
removing mirrorlist with no valid mirrors: //var/cache/yum/updates/mirrorlist.txt
Error: Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: updates

Can anyone pls suggest me?
Thanks

EDIT:

$releasever is spelled wrong.

not sure where your problem is but this is what my [updates] section looks like

#released updates
[updates]
name=CentOS-$releasever - Updates
mirrorlist=http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=$releasever&arch=$basearch&repo=updates
#baseurl=http://mirror.centos.org/centos/$releasever/updates/$basearch/
gpgcheck=1
gpgkey=http://mirror.centos.org/centos/RPM-GPG-KEY-CentOS-5

@ncsuapex : $releasever is correct, see your own post #5. Its short for 'release version'.

Yeah I noticed that after I posted my updates section. From what I see his looks right. Unless he has a conflicting updates section in another repo file. Otherwise I'm not sure what his issue is.

iirc, I've heard that Centos only has updates for the latest version (currently 5.4), so the OP would just run

yum upgrade

(yum update might work) to get to 5.4
That's what I did.
