What is the proper procedure for using yum?

I am sure that a 'su' is needed. Do I do an update or upgrade first??

Thanks,

What do you mean that a "su is needed" ? If you need root's privileges to use the program, well, su to root to run or setup sudo or even change the permissions so regular uses can run it also.
