You have not defined root partition .. RH9 install error

I've used linux before, only I reformatted my hd about half a year ago, and forgot about it since then. Now I want to reinstall RH9, but I can't get past the partitioning. First it says 'Could not allocate partitions', then 'You have not defined root (/) partition. Possible reason is not enough free space'.

Here is my hard drive partitioning info:

Total: 58643 MB

Local Disk (C:) 8,628 MB -- Primary, Active
(*) 47,002 MB 0-- Extended
Documents (Y:) -- 3,498 MB -- Logical
My Programs (X:) -- 25,000 MB -- Logical
My Files (Z:) -- 18,504 MB -- Logical
(*) -- 3,012 MB -- Unallocated

I want to install RH9 in the unallocated space ... I'm wondering if 3 gigs is enough, or maybe the fact that it's outside the extended partition and at the very end of the drive. I don't want to install linux on a logical partition, besides how does it boot from one? I'm open to solutions/suggestions :-P

You have to install it on a Logical partition according to your setup. There is no other way around it. What exactly are you doing to select the space and then creating a / partition?

ACK!! Why can't I install it in the unallocated space outside the extended partition?

I'm using the automatic partitioning option "Leave everything and install in free space"
