yahoo chat clients for linux
 

is there any programs out there for yahoo chat rooms on linux that any of u recomend?

Gaim (http://gaim.sourceforge.net) is certainly the best available IM client for Linux, but unfortunately yahoo isnt working in gaim now..

You can try yahoo messenger for Linux from the yahoo site (http://messenger.yahoo.com/messenger/download/unix.html), it sucks, but if you are desparate, you can give it a shot!!

Yahoo's own seems to be the best bet. If you're running Suse, the RedHat one should work.

But none of these clients support the yahoo chat rooms AFAIK. Anybody knows any clients that do?

the only thing ive ever used that supported the chat room side was cheeta. wich is only made for windows. ive heard of some other IRC'like things that do that too. but again all are just for windows. someone should make a linux port for cheeta (www.cheetachat.net)

i tried the redhat RPM once already and it worked very nicely until someone booted my computer up to use windows. and then for reasons i dont understand i couldnt log back into my linux user account and i had to make a new one. anyone know what caused this? or how i could prevent it?

Try Gyach. That seems to be what it's for (and it may actually work with their new protocol change - Gaim won't)

I am running Fedora. I installed the latest client from the yahoo site. It installed fine but does not work properly. I am able to log on and see my friends' list. However, the window becomes 'dumb' . Nothing happens no matter where I click in the screen. :(

What should I do?

Did you install fine without dependancy issues? All I can think of is that perhaps a dep is missing but it installed anyways. I use mine all the time (that's how I get my LQ mail notifications. LOL) and that's not an issue I came across. There have been others, but not lately.

If you can't solve it, and you are already running some KDE apps (as in already had to load the libs), you could try kopete. It understamds Yahoo!s change of protocol. i don't like it as much because you have to click on the send button. Hitting enter just gives you a carriage return. I know. Its a small thing.

I tried installed kopete but my problem is still not solved. When I try to run it, it gives the following errors:

The executable is in /opt/kde3/bin. Is that ok?

Kopete can be configured to send a message when you hit the enter key. Go to settings and configure short cuts, send message, custom and hit the enter key. It annoyed me until I found this.
Something I would to see is yahoo email notification, but I will live without for now.

It annoyed me enough to go back to what always had worked - amsn. Perhaps......

Here's what I do:

running Slackware 9.1, I use the Yahoo Linux client. You can't directly access the chatrooms with it, but you just go to the my yahoo webpage with mozilla, or some java-enabled web browser, log into the java client, then go to chat. The java chat client will open, then you can get to the webpage that lists the chatrooms. Just bookmark that page. Then, just close the java chat client, and re-login to the regular Yahoo Linux client and you can then choose your chatroom off the webpage, and it will open in a web-browser window. You can then do IMs with the Yahoo client like normal.

gyach is nice .and now gyach enhanced is available from souceforge.net

i have gyach 0.9.7 and it work pretty well.

and by looking at the site sourseforge.net for gyach enhanced i was confused which are files to download . since i am new to linux so if you anyone know which are to be downloadwd

Gaim 0.76 has fully working Yahoo! support in it

there are few good chat clients for yahoo. zinc is my favorite. gyach-improved is probly the best gui client.
i have a list of them on my website at subliminal-hate. org in the yahoo section. couple other ones i dont have listed as well kopete for example. im not allowed making a real link to the page as i am new here :)
