xwindows? display problem

Something is suddenly wrong with my system.
On startup, it no longer starts x windows, as it has been.

I shut it down, then came back after lunch, started up and now its messed up.
I have not been playing with any system settings.
I have not been logged on as root for weeks.

If i login and then type 'startx', i get in,
but some apps don't work others do.

Do work:
Firefox
Gimp
GwenView
OpenOffice
Konqueror

Don't work:
Evolution
Eclipse

Evolution starts up, but most of the window is blank
(the menu is there, and the send/receive button)

Eclipse gives this error:

JVM terminated. Exit code=1
/usr/bin/java
-Xms40m
-Xmx256m
-jar /usr/local/eclipse/startup.jar
-os linux
-ws gtk
-arch x86
-launcher /usr/local/eclipse/eclipse
-name Eclipse
-showsplash 600
-exitdata 190002
-data /mnt/bdrive/work/development/Java
-vm /usr/bin/java
-vmargs
-Xms40m
-Xmx256m
-jar /usr/local/eclipse/startup.jar

This dialog has popped up:

Nautilus can't be used now, due to an unexpected error.

Nautilus can't be used now,
due to an unexpected error from Bonobo when attempting to locate the factory.
Killing bonobo-activation-server and restarting Nautilus may help fix the problem.

What can i do?

try creating a new user account and the do the startx thing from there, sometimes config files stored in the user's home get corrupted and this leads to odd behaviour...

Another way to do much the same thing without creating a whole new user account is to log into the console as root and moving the user's home directory files (including the hidden files) to a backup directory.
