I'm a newbie to Linux, but have worked with Solaris for a long time. I'm running RH9. I am wanting to run programs from a Sun server and display the graphics on my RH9 as client.

From the RH9 box I have run:
xhost +<server name>
then connected onto the server using ssh
then set the environment variable:
setenv DISPLAY <client machine>:0.0

This works fine with Cygwin or a Solaris box, but I when I try to connect with the RH9 client I get:
<Server >[sparc] 2% /usr/openwin/bin/textedit fred &
[1] 5869
<Server> [sparc] 3% XView error: Cannot open connection to window server: <Client>:0.0 (Server package)

(I have substituted <Server> and <client> for the actual machine names.

Any help would be gratefully received.

I think I know what the problem is. My firewall is set to 'medium' and that is stopping the connection to the local X display. I do not want to turn the firewall off for obvious reasons. How can I customise the firewall settings so that I can run an display graphics from an X client.

I have been told another solution that works fine.
Simply ssh onto the client and make sure that the DISPLAY variable is not set in the .cshrc or .login file on the client.
