Xterm and meta characters

So a bit of background. I run IRSSI on a linux server in a screen so its always connected. I've been using kde and konsole for a long time as a window manager, and just recently switched over to xfce and it uses xterm. I prefer xterm so far, but it seems to be having problems passing meta chars. Like I try to press ALT + 3 to move to another screen and instead it puts the little cubed 3.

I skimmed thru the man page and came across XTerm*alwaysUseMods: true so I added that to .Xresources and .Xdefaults and neither seemed to help.

Anyone have any ideas?

You may need to set either of
Code:
*eightBitInput: false
*eightBitControl: false
in you .Xdefaults. See the xterm manual.
