XScreenSaver and the Lorenz Attractor: adding a favorite missing screensaver?
By far my favorite screensaver on Xscreensaver was the Lorenz Attractor screensaver, but this is absent from my current xscreensaver version 5.11 on Slackware 13.1. I feel my slack install is not complete without my favorite screensaver, so please point me in the right direction to find this screensaver:
1st Question: I did some rummaging, and I believe the necessary files are: /usr/libexec/xscreensaver/lorenz /usr/share/xscreensaver/config/lorenz.xml then editing ~/.xscreensaver to add the lorenz line. Would this work, and if so could someone point me in the direction to these files on the web? Is my assesment of adding a screensaver correct? If that doesn't fly: I am aware in certain repositories of a package called xsceensaver-extras-X.XX. I am rather unfamiliar with slack's package management, but did not find any xscreensaver .txz file anywhere. Please correct me if I am wrong. Is there somewhere else I can find a .rpm file of the xscreensaver-extras package and explode it to find my necessary files? |
don't know if you still need help on this one...
a quick search on the net got me this site... http://www.linux-support.com/cms/en/...r-for-kde-man1 and a search of Applications/ubuntu software centre comes up with a program called rss-glx which includes Lorenz Attractor... now if they can relate to your slackware system you might have a solution... |
Thanks for the information pandanuma, it was indeed the rss-glx (Really Slick Screensavers) package that I lacked.
I downloaded the rss-glx package off of slackbuilds.org website from here:http://slackbuilds.org/repository/13.1/desktop/rss-glx/ It built no problem. After installing the SB package following SB instructions, I ran the rss-glx-install.pl script in the utils/ folder in the installation directory. This updates your .xscreensaver file to include the new ss. Unfortunately, the lorenz screensaver is a new one :(, and not my old pal i remember. The Lorenz SS i remember was a fixed-camera plot of the lorenz attractor. The new lorenz ss in rss-glx is much fancier and swoops along the attractor in a 1st person mode. Cool, but not the exact thing i was looking for. I will still post this as solved though, and maybe update it later if I ever find the ORIGINAL lorenz ss i remember from my first experience with linux on a Kubuntu 6.0 install. |
don't you love it when your favorite programs are updated...
