Could you post a copy of your current bootloader's config file (/etc/lilo.conf or /etc/grub.conf)?

Try adding a table line. My setup, and all my previous setups, contained (editred to suite your purposes) the following:
other=/dev/hda1
label="XP"
table=/dev/hda

Remember that you must re-run lilo (as root) to make any changes to lilo.conf take effect.
