xorg issues, unable to get specific resolutions


I have a brand new arch install with xorg 7 and xfce 4.4. my video is on board video driven by a intel 865g chipset. I have configured X to run but I am only getting 1280x1024@75 hz. I seem to be unable to figure out how to get it to run at 1680x1050@60 hz [the default resolution for my 20" widescreen lcd monitor.] any help getting it to run at a color depth of 32 is appreciated as well, it hangs if I try to turn it up from 24. I've included my xorg.conf file as it stands after my hand editing to try to fix this at the bottom, thanks in advance for any help.

Using 24bit gets you the 32 bit you want anyways.

As you can see above in my grep output it gives you 32bpp when using the 24 option. Now here in your monitor section are these values that you put in for the refresh rates? If not then you should get out your monitor manual and put the correct ones in there and you might want to get rid of them mode line they should not really be necessary anymore Xorg can figure these things out just fine all by itself plus just use the resolution you want in your screen section.

Now if my couple of suggestion do not work can you post the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file so we can see what is going on when everything gets detected, it is rather big so you will need to put it into two posts.

I'm surprised this person got this much with i865 and vesa driver, there has been many threads regarding that chip set where they only got graphics when dropping the depth to 16 because there is no more than 16MB of memory allocated for graphics, (check in bios), usually only 8MB. You can also try the i810 driver which is normally included with most Linux, but it may degrade more than upgrade, worth trying though for the halibut. 1680x1050 might be hard to reach, can also try 1400x900.

I'll give that a shot happy tux. I'm at work right now, so it will be a few hours.

I am not sure what you are talking about junior hacker, I ran beryl with emerald @ 1600x1200 on this hardware with my last monitor. the only doubt in my mind about 1680x1050 is because its a 16/10 ratio instead of 4/3 like most monitors until just recently.

Like I say, it's surprising based on the amount of i865 graphics related issues that have been posted here in the past few months, must be a mother board or distribution difference. There has been many frustrated i865'ers out there who eventually were happy to just see color instead of black and white.

I tend to have that problem more with the two radeon 9600 cards I have in other machines. I used hwd [an arch hardware configuration tool] to write my xorg.conf and was able to run 1600x1200 just fine with my old crt. maybe I am just lucky with this particular board, maybe the g at the end of the 865 makes all the difference. though I will say "just happy to see color instead of black and white" sounds like everyone their first time they configure x on their own instead of using a distro that does it all for them. seems to be an ongoing challenge for all of us.

I set the horizontal sync and vertical sync ranges based on the specs provided by the manufacturer and removed all but the 24 bit depth 1680x1050 resolution. restarted the X server and it runs but my monitor says it is not in its recommended mode [1680x1050@60hz] and refuses to show a picture. the following is the specifics of the mode I am trying to achieve straight from samsung.

I tried setting those specifics as the max frequency and it does the same thing. I also get the same result when I set those frequencies as my min and max. I tried both of the above with both exact numbers and rounded to the nearest whole number. every time the monitor says it is not a supported frequency and does not display a picture, is there something I am missing?

Here it is showing you that it has an additional supported mode for your 1680x1050 at the 119.00 clock try using this for your modeline never had to use one before but then again never used the vesa driver much either.

Just tried this with my flat panel which has the same resolution as yours and it did not want to work with the vesa driver, during my searches I came up with a lot of posts describing problems with Intel on-board graphics this one here suggests using the 855resolution program along with the i810 driver to get the proper widescreen resolution you might want to give that a try.

I am going to give his fix a shot first, happytux. I seem to be getting miles further than other 865 guys. it also involves just a config file edit instead of installing new software. I'll keep the i810 driver and 855 resolution in mind if thats a no go. won't get a chance to work on it till I get home from work ~8am. I'll definitely post with what works when I have it running.
