xorg-driver-fglrx causes garbled screen
 
I install the proprietary xorg-driver-fglrx drivers via synaptic, however when I restart when I get to the Ubuntu loading screen the picture becomes garbled and unreadable, I then have to remove the driver via CLI recovery mode, then it works fine.
At first I thought that it was conflicting with the default open source driver that comes with Ubuntu (xserver-xorg-video-radeon) but I removed it and it still gives me a garbled screen.
I'm running an ATI Radeon 9600XT with 256MB RAM and have 32-bit Ubuntu.

I'd prefer not to have to reinstall Ubuntu but if that's what's necessary then please, don't hesitate to tell me.
Also the installer from the ati site doesn't seem to work, tried it on two different computers.

Can you explain what you mean by "doesn't seem to work"? What steps did you take and what were the results? At what point did it not seem to work?

On a separate point, if you are not interested in 3D acceleration then the open source drivers should be fine.

You cant have ATI fglrx operational with xserver 1.6.0
I am finding a way to downgrade to 1.5.x if it is possible. It is major screwup, and I am sure it is ATI's fault.

run this

I'm not sure I understand. I have fglrx operational with 7.3+10. The ATI site says, "Automated installer and Display Drivers for X.Org 6.7, 6.8, 6.9, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3, or 7.4". Was that a typo? did you mean 7.6 and not 1.6 in your post? If not I don't understand where you're getting your version numbers from.

Hi!
I had to install fglrx driver on my notebook for ATI RADEON HD 3200 graphics to get compiz working. I am using Debian SID, so i think this will apply to UBUNTU also.
I also had the same problem.
You have to build it for the kernel from fglrx-source after installing it on your system.
Detailed instructions are given in the documentation that comes with the driver. It can be found in documentation_directory/fglrx-source/
It has worked for me.

Knightranger, I will try this.

Code above that I found is not a good idea on Kubuntu, at least. KDE4 goes away, so I lost an hour to get it back to how it was.
